Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Czechia.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Czechia.

Requirements for a Foreigner to Legally Drive in Czechia

A foreigner from an EU country can use their home country's driver's license in Czechia without any time limit. However, non-EU citizens can use their foreign driver's license for only 90 days after entering the country. After this period, they must obtain a Czech driver's license.

The requirements do not differ based on the city, state, or region within Czechia. The process is uniform throughout the country.

Process for Obtaining a Czech Driver's License

Here is a detailed process for obtaining a Czech driver's license:

  • Residency Requirement: The applicant must have a valid residence permit in Czechia.
  • Medical Examination: Complete a medical examination at a certified medical facility. This includes a general health check, eye test, and reaction test.
  • Driving School: Enroll in a certified driving school. The course includes theory lessons and practical driving lessons.
  • Theory Exam: Pass the theory exam, which is a multiple-choice test covering traffic rules, signs, and regulations.
  • Practical Exam: Pass the practical driving exam, which is conducted on public roads with a certified examiner.
  • Application Submission: Submit the application for the driver's license at the Municipal Authority (M?stský ú?ad) or the Municipal Office with extended powers (Obecní ú?ad obce s rozší?enou p?sobností). The application should include:
    • Completed application form
    • Valid passport or residence permit
    • Medical examination report
    • Certificate of completion from the driving school
    • Proof of passing the theory and practical exams
    • One passport-sized photograph
  • Fee Payment: Pay the administrative fee for issuing the driver's license.
  • License Issuance: Once all requirements are met and the application is approved, the driver's license will be issued. The processing time may vary.

It is recommended to check with the local Municipal Authority for the most up-to-date information and specific requirements, as procedures can change.
