Requirements for a Foreigner to Legally Drive in India

A foreigner can legally drive in India with an International Driving Permit (IDP) for up to one year. After that, they must obtain a local Indian driver's license. The requirements do not differ based on the city, state, or region. Here are the details:

Driving with an International Driving Permit (IDP)

• The IDP must be issued by the home country or a recognized driving authority.
• The IDP must be accompanied by a valid driver's license from the home country.
• The IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue.

Obtaining a Local Indian Driver's License

After one year, a foreigner must obtain a local Indian driver's license. Here is the process:

• Eligibility: The applicant must be at least 18 years old and have a valid visa for more than one year.
• Application Form: Obtain and fill out the application form from the nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO) or online through the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways website.
• Documents Required:
  • Passport with valid visa
  • Proof of address (rental agreement, utility bill, etc.)
  • Valid driver's license from home country
  • Passport-sized photographs
  • Medical certificate (Form 1A)
• Learner's License Test: Appear for the learner's license test, which is a multiple-choice question test about traffic rules and regulations.
• Learner's License: If the test is passed, a learner's license will be issued. This license is valid for six months.
• Driving Test: After one month of obtaining the learner's license, the applicant can appear for the driving test.
• Permanent License: If the driving test is passed, a permanent driver's license will be issued.
