Driving in Mumbai

Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Mumbai.

1. Chaotic Traffic

Driving in Mumbai can be quite chaotic and stressful, especially for newcomers. The city is known for its heavy traffic, with cars, bikes, auto-rickshaws, and buses all jostling for space. The traffic rules are often not strictly followed, and you may find vehicles coming from all directions. It’s important to stay alert and patient while driving.

2. Car Recommendation

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Mumbai due to the heavy traffic and narrow lanes. Smaller cars are easier to maneuver and park. However, if you’re planning to travel outside the city frequently, an SUV might be a better option for comfort and safety.

3. Parking Difficulty

Finding parking in Mumbai can be quite challenging, especially in crowded areas. Most residential and commercial buildings have limited parking spaces. It’s advisable to check the parking situation before moving into a new place or visiting a particular area.

4. Parking Cost

Parking can be quite expensive in Mumbai, especially in commercial areas. The cost varies depending on the location and duration. Some residential buildings also charge a monthly fee for parking.

5. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in India with an International Driving Permit (IDP) for up to one year. After that, they need to obtain an Indian driving license. The IDP must be issued in the same country where the driving license was issued.

6. Obtaining an Indian Driving License

To obtain an Indian driving license, you need to apply through the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The process involves a written test and a practical driving test. You need to provide various documents, including proof of residence, passport, visa, and your home country’s driving license. It’s advisable to hire a local agent to help with the process.

7. Hiring a Driver

Many expats in Mumbai prefer to hire a driver rather than driving themselves. This can be a more convenient and stress-free option, especially if you’re not used to the chaotic traffic. Drivers in Mumbai are relatively affordable and can be hired on a monthly basis.

8. Using Public Transport or Taxis

Public transport and taxis are widely available in Mumbai and can be a good alternative to driving. The city has a comprehensive network of trains, buses, and auto-rickshaws. There are also various app-based taxi services like Uber and Ola.
