Tips for Expats Driving in Kolkata

2. Car Recommendation
It's recommended to use a small, compact car for driving in Kolkata due to the narrow and congested roads. A small car will be easier to maneuver and park. However, if you're not comfortable with driving in such conditions, it might be better to hire a driver or use public transportation or taxis.
3. Parking Difficulty and Cost
Finding parking in Kolkata can be quite difficult, especially in crowded areas. Most of the parking is on-street and it's often hard to find a spot. Parking fees vary depending on the area, but they are generally not very expensive. However, due to the difficulty of finding parking, it's often more convenient to use public transportation or taxis when going to crowded areas.
4. Driving with an International License
Foreigners can drive in India with an International Driving Permit (IDP) for up to one year. After that, they need to obtain an Indian driving license. The IDP must be issued in the same country where your driving license was issued.
5. Obtaining an Indian Driving License
To obtain an Indian driving license, you need to apply at the local Regional Transport Office (RTO). You will need to provide several documents, including your passport, visa, proof of residence, and your home country's driving license. You will also need to pass a written test and a practical driving test. It's recommended to hire a driving school to help you with the process, as it can be quite complicated and time-consuming.
6. Be Patient and Alert
Patience and alertness are key when driving in Kolkata. The traffic can be unpredictable and you need to be ready for anything. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you and be aware of pedestrians, cyclists, and animals on the road.
7. Avoid Peak Hours
If possible, try to avoid driving during peak hours, which are usually in the morning and evening. The traffic can be very heavy during these times and it can take a long time to reach your destination.
