Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Kisumu.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Kisumu, like many other parts of Kenya, can be a bit chaotic for newcomers. The traffic rules are not always strictly adhered to and you may find drivers overtaking in places you wouldn't expect. It's important to drive defensively and always be aware of your surroundings. The roads can also be in poor condition, especially in the rainy season, so be prepared for potholes and other obstacles.

2. Choosing the Right Car

Given the condition of some roads, a 4x4 vehicle is often recommended. This will handle the rougher roads better and is also suitable for any trips you might want to take to the surrounding countryside or game reserves. However, in the city itself, any type of car would generally be fine.

3. Parking in Kisumu

Finding parking in Kisumu is not usually a problem, especially compared to larger cities like Nairobi. There are plenty of parking lots and street parking available. The cost of parking is also relatively low, but it's always a good idea to have some small change on hand for parking fees.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Kenya with an international driving permit for up to one year. After that, you will need to obtain a Kenyan driving license. It's important to always have your driving permit and passport with you when driving, as traffic police may ask to see them.

5. Obtaining a Kenyan Driving License

To get a Kenyan driving license, you will need to go through a driving school and pass both a theory and practical test. The process can be time-consuming and may require patience. It's recommended to start this process well before your international permit expires to avoid any period without a valid license.

6. Safety Precautions

As with any place, it's important to take safety precautions when driving. Avoid driving at night if possible, as the roads are not well lit and pedestrians or animals can be hard to see. Also, always lock your doors and keep windows up when driving in the city to prevent opportunistic theft.
