1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Lugano, like most parts of Switzerland, is generally a pleasant experience. The roads are well-maintained and the drivers are disciplined. However, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the local driving rules and regulations. For instance, the Swiss drive on the right-hand side of the road and it’s mandatory to use headlights during the day.

2. Choosing the Right Car

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Lugano due to the narrow and winding roads, especially in the mountainous areas. If you plan to drive in winter, consider a car with 4-wheel drive and winter tires. Also, automatic cars are more common in Switzerland, so if you’re used to driving a manual, you might need to adjust.

3. Parking in Lugano

Finding parking in Lugano can be challenging, especially in the city center. Most parking spaces are metered and can be quite expensive. However, there are several parking garages available. It’s advisable to use public transportation or walk when possible, as Lugano is a compact city and most places are easily accessible.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Switzerland with an international driving permit (IDP) for up to 12 months. After this period, you will need to obtain a Swiss driving license. It’s important to carry your IDP and your home country’s driving license whenever you drive.

5. Obtaining a Swiss Driving License

If you’re moving to Lugano from a country that Switzerland has a reciprocal agreement with, you can exchange your foreign driving license for a Swiss one without taking a driving test. However, if your country doesn’t have such an agreement, you will need to take a theory test and a practical driving test. It’s advisable to take a few driving lessons to familiarize yourself with the Swiss driving rules and style.

6. Speed Limits

Speed limits in Switzerland are strictly enforced. The standard speed limits are 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on open roads, and 120 km/h on motorways. Be aware of speed cameras and always adhere to the speed limits to avoid hefty fines.

7. Winter Driving

Winter driving in Lugano can be challenging due to snow and ice. It’s mandatory to have winter tires from November to April. Also, carry snow chains in your car and know how to use them. Always check the weather forecast before setting off on a long journey.
