Uganda may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of Christmas festivities, but the Pearl of Africa has its unique charm during the holiday season. Expats and digital nomads living in Uganda can find a variety of places that offer a festive atmosphere, complete with holiday markets, decorations, and events. Whether you're looking for a vibrant city celebration or a more laid-back town vibe, these destinations are sure to get you into the holiday spirit.

Kampala City Centre

Kampala, the bustling capital city of Uganda, comes alive during the Christmas season with lights, decorations, and a general festive mood. The city centre is particularly vibrant, with shops and malls decked out in holiday decor. One of the highlights is the Christmas market, where you can find a variety of crafts, gifts, and local delicacies. The market usually takes place in early December and is a great place to pick up unique Ugandan Christmas gifts.

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to try some of the local treats at the market, such as the much-loved Rolex, a Ugandan street food that consists of a rolled chapati filled with eggs and vegetables. It's a delicious and quick snack while you're exploring the stalls.

Jinja Town

Jinja, known as the adventure capital of Uganda, offers a more relaxed holiday vibe. The town is famous for its proximity to the source of the Nile River and during December, the main streets are adorned with festive lights. The annual Christmas parade, which takes place in mid-December, features colorful floats and performances by local schools and community groups. It's a wonderful way to experience Ugandan culture and holiday cheer.

We Recommend: After enjoying the parade, head to the Nile River for a sunset cruise. The serene waters and beautiful scenery provide a perfect backdrop for reflection and relaxation during the holiday season.

Entebbe's Botanical Gardens

Entebbe, with its serene Botanical Gardens, offers a unique Christmas experience. During December, the gardens are often the site of holiday concerts and events. The lush greenery and exotic plants make for a tranquil escape from the more hectic holiday activities. Look out for special Christmas-themed events, such as carol nights or a Christmas fair, which are usually held in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

We Recommend: If there's a carol night, it's an event not to be missed. The combination of traditional Ugandan and international Christmas songs creates a magical atmosphere that's both heartwarming and festive.

Mbarara Town

Mbarara, the largest town in Western Uganda, is known for its friendly atmosphere and cultural diversity. During the holiday season, the town center is decorated with festive lights and nativity scenes. The Christmas market in Mbarara is a great place to find handcrafted items and local produce. The market usually runs throughout December, offering plenty of time to enjoy the holiday offerings.

We Recommend: Be sure to try the local Ankole cow milk, which is often sold at the market. It's a staple in the region and can be a refreshing treat while shopping.

Gulu Town

Gulu, in the northern region of Uganda, has a growing reputation for its Christmas festivities. The town's main streets are illuminated with festive lights, and local churches often hold special services and events. The Gulu Christmas market is a highlight, featuring traditional Acholi crafts and foods. The market typically starts in early December and is a great opportunity to learn about the local culture.

We Recommend: Don't leave the market without trying some of the local Acholi dishes, such as malakwang, a sour vegetable dish that is both delicious and unique to the region.

Fort Portal Town

Fort Portal, nestled in the shadow of the Rwenzori Mountains, is known for its stunning scenery and cooler climate. During December, the town embraces the holiday spirit with decorations and lights. The Fort Portal Christmas Fair, usually held in the town square, offers a range of local crafts, foods, and entertainment. It's a festive gathering place for both locals and visitors.

We Recommend: Look out for the traditional Rwenzori coffee being sold at the fair. It's a local specialty and the perfect warm beverage to enjoy on a cool Fort Portal evening.

Kabale Town

Kabale, often referred to as the 'Switzerland of Africa' due to its hilly landscape, is another great spot for Christmas festivities. The town's Christmas market is known for its artisanal crafts and vibrant atmosphere. Local choirs and bands often perform, adding to the festive mood. The market is typically open throughout December, giving visitors plenty of time to soak in the holiday spirit.

We Recommend: Try the local crayfish from Lake Bunyonyi, which is often featured at the market. It's a delicacy in the region and a must-try for seafood lovers.

Lugazi Town

Lugazi is a small town with a big Christmas spirit. The town's main street is transformed with lights and decorations, creating a festive environment. Lugazi's Christmas market is a hub for local artisans to showcase their work, and it's a great place to find unique gifts. The market usually runs from early to late December, and it's accompanied by music and dance performances from the local community.

We Recommend: Be sure to enjoy some of the freshly made sugarcane juice sold at the market. It's a sweet and refreshing treat that's popular among the locals.
