Summary: Expats face a lot of stressors living abroad. It's important to know how mental healthcare services work in Turkey should you need them.

Moving to a new country can be an exciting adventure, but it also comes with its own set of challenges, including understanding and accessing mental health services. For expats and digital nomads in Turkey, navigating the mental health care system and cultural attitudes can be daunting. This article aims to provide a comprehensive guide to help you understand and access mental health services in Turkey.

Finding a Mental Health Care Provider in Turkey

Finding an English-speaking mental health care provider in Turkey can be challenging, especially outside of major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. However, it is not impossible. Many private hospitals and clinics have staff who speak English. Online platforms and expat communities can also be valuable resources for finding English-speaking mental health professionals. It's important to note that while English may not be widely spoken, many Turks are incredibly helpful and will do their best to assist you.

Similarity to English-Speaking Nations

The mental health care services provided in Turkey may not be exactly what one expects from English-speaking nations. While Turkey has made significant strides in mental health care, it is still developing. The system is more centered around medical treatment rather than therapeutic services. However, you can find many private practices offering psychotherapy and counseling services similar to those in English-speaking countries.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy in Turkey

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is recognized and practiced in Turkey, but it is not yet the standard of care for anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders. The mental health care system in Turkey is more psychodynamically oriented. However, you can find professionals practicing CBT, especially in private clinics and hospitals in major cities. It's always a good idea to ask about the therapist's approach before starting treatment.

Online Mental Health Services in Turkey

Expats and nomads often favor using online services due to their convenience and accessibility. In Turkey, online mental health services are available and can be a good option, especially for those living in rural areas or with mobility issues. However, technological barriers like internet connectivity issues or power outages can sometimes impede the delivery of these services. Additionally, while online services are legal, it's important to ensure that the practitioner is qualified and registered.

Other Important Considerations

Cultural attitudes towards mental health in Turkey are evolving, but stigma still exists. It's not uncommon for mental health issues to be dismissed or misunderstood. It's also important to note that Turkey has a history of high psychiatric medication use. Therefore, it's crucial to communicate clearly about your preferences and boundaries regarding medication. Additionally, if you have specific needs, such as LGBTQ+ friendly services, it may be helpful to reach out to local communities and organizations for recommendations.

Lastly, always ensure that the mental health professional you choose is qualified and registered. In Turkey, psychologists and psychiatrists should be registered with the Turkish Psychological Association or the Turkish Medical Association, respectively.
