Public transportation in Cairns is a well-organized system that offers a variety of options for both locals and tourists. The city is served by Sunbus, a local bus service, and the Queensland Rail, which provides train services. There are also numerous taxi services and Uber is available as well. For those who prefer a more active mode of transportation, Cairns is a bike-friendly city with numerous bike lanes and paths. With these options, an expat living in Cairns could comfortably live without a car, relying on public transportation and walking. However, having a car could be beneficial for those who live outside the city center or wish to explore the surrounding areas.

Sunbus

Sunbus is the primary mode of public transportation in Cairns, providing bus services throughout the city and its suburbs. The buses are clean, comfortable, and generally safe to use at any time of the day. They are also a popular choice for school children. The cost of a ticket depends on the number of zones traveled, but a single trip within one zone costs around $2.70 for an adult. There are also daily, weekly, and monthly passes available, which can be more cost-effective for regular commuters. The routes cover most areas of the city, making it a convenient option for getting around. However, the frequency of buses can be low during off-peak hours and on weekends, so it’s advisable to check the timetable in advance.

Queensland Rail

The Queensland Rail operates train services from Cairns to other parts of Queensland, including Brisbane, Townsville, and the Gold Coast. The trains are modern and comfortable, offering a scenic and relaxing way to travel. They are generally safe, even for women traveling alone or children. The cost of a ticket varies depending on the destination, but a one-way trip to Brisbane, for example, costs around $80 for an adult. The train station is located in the city center, making it easily accessible. However, the train services are more suitable for intercity travel rather than daily commuting within Cairns.

Taxis and Uber

Taxis are readily available in Cairns, and they can be hailed on the street, booked over the phone, or through a mobile app. The fares are metered and relatively affordable, with a short trip within the city center costing around $10. Uber is also available in Cairns, offering a convenient and often cheaper alternative to taxis. Both taxis and Uber are safe to use, even at night or for women traveling alone. However, during peak hours or special events, it can be difficult to get a taxi or Uber, and the fares can be higher.

Bicycling

Cairns is a bike-friendly city with numerous bike lanes and paths. Bicycling is a popular mode of transportation among locals, especially for short trips within the city center. It’s also a great way to explore the city and enjoy the beautiful scenery. There are several bike rental shops in the city, offering a variety of bikes for rent at reasonable prices. Bicycling is generally safe in Cairns, but it’s advisable to wear a helmet and follow the traffic rules. However, during the rainy season, bicycling can be less convenient due to the wet and slippery roads.
