We have our short list narrowed down to Queretaro, Puebla, Morelia, Guanajuato, and Oaxaca City. We started with wanting cool weather, safe city, we speak Spanish and have lived abroad before so we don't care if there are expat groups, walkable city with lots to do, fairly low cost of living. We think our top two are Queretaro and Puebla. Puebla as cooler temps which we love, but we see a fair amount of comments about Queretaro being safe and Puebla gets mixed safety reviews ? Thoughts ? We may visit all of these cities but initially we will likely have at least one senior dog so probably wont travel around too much while they are still with us. Thanks very much !

GIANT POLICE PRESENCE HERE - First, you could stop shouting. - Second. Have you considered why there is a 'giant police presence' there? - Third. You do know that your supposedly 'safe' border town is by far abd away the femicide capital of Mexico? - Fourth. You're trying to tell the rest of us that our towns and cities are dangerous and cartel controlled when by your own admission you have lived nowhere but a dangerous border town for the last four years?

Don’t place too much weight on the SHOUTING doomsayer from Juarez. The Silver Mining cities you list are all wonderful (Guanajuato, San Miguel, others), and Oaxaca is a unique place in the world: indigenous, humble, spectacular food & friendly people. Anywhere you go (really, border towns and American tourist towns are the worst), just refrain from being an American jerk (like money is the most valuable thing in life) and realize that the Mexican Way has real benefits to living a better life. You’ll be warmly welcomed.

The above quote has been our experience 100% in the 4 yrs we have been in Merida. The noise about cartels and violence is far more prevalent in Juarez than most other places.

Hi Edgenaples, If you are considering Queretaro you might want to consider San Miguel de Allende which is an hour by car or an hour and 15 mins by bus from Queretaro. You'd love San Miguel with its arts scene and its colonial center. The best thing is that you can make day trips to Queretaro to visit the major mlls and shoping in Queretaro. I myself have just oved to San Miguel from the state of Oaxaca where taught English at a University in southern Oaxaca. If your going to be looking for your city, why not rent in San Miguel for a few months visit Queretaro kill 2 birds with one stone. Then you could check out the other cities while your using San Miguel and Queretaro as your home base. One piece of advice Puebla City gets cold in the winter time it is close to 10,000 feet high in the mountains east of Mexico City.

We've become big fans of the Lake Chapala area since we arrived in Mexico Aug 2020 in covid. Active expat community and choices and prices of housing are abundant. Guadalajara is only 45 mins away by car.
Lake Chapala is the elevation of Denver and the latitude of Hawaii, one reason the weather has been ranked as 2nd best in the world. Not too hot, and not too cold. Visit weatherspark.com to help regardless of where you choose.
Buena suerte!
