Deciding Where to Live in Lithuania

When we asked expats living in Lithuania to offer newcomers advice about choosing a neighborhood and finding a home, they replied:

"Actually my wife at that time chose this flat due to location. Things to watch out for: a seedy neighbourhood, top and bottom floors, brand-new flats (sub-standard fixtures and settling can cause serious damage), and no shade. The sun can get pretty hot here and if you have no balcony overhand or trees to block the summer sun, June/July can get pretty warm on occasion. Insist on a steel door," said one expat living in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Expat Life in Lithuania

What is it like living in Lithuania? Here is what people had to say:

"This is a very typical Lithuanian city. There is a very small international population. Most people have lived in this city all of their lives and can recognize a lot of their friends by simply walking down the street," said one expat living in Alytus, Lithuania.

What Expats Appreciate about Their New Culture

We asked expats in Lithuania what they appreciated about their new culture. Here's what they had to say:

"It's cleaner, more peaceful than in the UK. There seems to be less friction in the air, and it's almost like going back in time to a simpler life. The countryside can be quite beautiful in a truly unspoilt manner, and the children are delightful. I'm also very grateful for the high-speed reliable internet connection, which keeps me sane and allows me to manage our lives back in the UK," said one expat living in Visaginas, Lithuania.

The Most Challenging Aspects of Living in Lithuania

Then, we asked expats in Lithuania what was most challenging about their new culture. They replied:

"The income gaps between Lithuania and western economies. And the desire of some Lithuanians to speak English with you instead of helping you learn Lithuanian," said one expat living in Klaipeda, Lithuania.

"Without doubt, the language. I can get most of the things I need, although good quality clothing and bedding are in short supply here. I also miss the opportunity to meet new people, there is a lack of 'cultural opportunity' in this town," mentioned another expat in Lithuania.

Diversity in Lithuania

We asked expats about diversity in Lithuania and whether locals are accepting of differences. They said:

"The people are very closed up. There is little cultural diversity unlike Vilnius. But there won't be any backlash for a foreigner. People tend to accept internationals. It is a very quaint town and feels very homey," said one expat living in Alytus, Lithuania.
