When we asked expats and global nomads about their social experiences in Ghana, they replied:

"Expats, retirees and digital nomads living in Ghana typically have an active social life. They often join local clubs and organizations, attend cultural events, and make friends with other expats, retirees and digital nomads. They also often take part in activities such as hiking, swimming, and exploring the local culture. Additionally, they often take advantage of the vibrant nightlife in Ghana, with its many bars, clubs, and restaurants," said one expat in Ghana.

"Ghana is a vibrant and welcoming country with a lively social scene. People are friendly and open to meeting new people, and there are plenty of opportunities to socialize. There are a variety of bars, clubs, and restaurants to explore, as well as outdoor activities such as beach volleyball and hiking. Ghana also has a vibrant music and arts scene, with plenty of live music venues and art galleries to explore. There are also plenty of festivals and events throughout the year, such as the annual Emancipation Day celebration in Accra," said one expat in living in Ghana.

What are medical services in Ghana like?

When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Ghana, they replied:

"Ghana has a public health system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. The country also has a number of private hospitals and clinics that offer more specialized care. The quality of medical services in Ghana varies depending on the facility, but overall the country has a good standard of healthcare. The government has also implemented a number of initiatives to improve access to healthcare, such as the National Health Insurance Scheme, which provides free or subsidized healthcare to those who cannot afford it," remarked one expat in Ghana.

Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Ghana?

"Healthcare and health insurance in Ghana can be expensive, especially for those who are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The cost of medical care and health insurance can be prohibitive for many people, especially those living in rural areas. Additionally, the quality of healthcare services can vary greatly, with some facilities being better equipped than others. As a result, many people in Ghana are unable to access the healthcare they need due to the cost," explained one expat living in Ghana.

Is the cost of living in Ghana high?

We asked people about the cost of living in Ghana, they wrote:

"The cost of living in Ghana is generally considered to be quite affordable. However, the cost of living in the capital city of Accra is significantly higher than in other parts of the country. The rental price for a nice 1 bedroom apartment in Accra is around $500 USD per month, while a nice 2 bedroom apartment can cost up to $800 USD per month. Eating dinner at a moderately priced restaurant in Accra can cost around $10 USD per person," remarked one expat in Ghana.

What are the visa & residency requirements in Ghana?

"To enter Ghana, visitors must obtain a visa from a Ghanaian embassy or consulate prior to arrival. The process of applying for a visa involves submitting a completed visa application form, a valid passport, two passport-sized photographs, and a fee. Depending on the purpose of the visit, additional documents may be required. To apply for residency in Ghana, applicants must submit a completed application form, a valid passport, two passport-sized photographs, a medical certificate, a police report, and a fee. Applicants may also be required to provide proof of financial means, a letter of invitation, and/or a letter of employment. Once the application is approved, the applicant will be issued a residence permit," said one expat in living in Ghana.

When we asked people why foreigners move to Ghana, they responded:

"Ghana is an attractive destination for expats due to its vibrant culture, friendly people, and excellent quality of life. The country offers a wide range of activities and attractions, from its stunning beaches and national parks to its bustling cities and vibrant nightlife. Expats are also drawn to Ghana for its low cost of living, excellent healthcare system, and strong economy. Additionally, Ghana is a safe and welcoming country with a rich history and culture, making it an ideal place to live and work," explained one expat living in Ghana.

What do I need to know about living in Ghana?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Ghana, they said:

"1. Expats should research the cost of living in Ghana to ensure they can afford to retire there. 2. It is important to familiarize oneself with the local culture and customs to ensure a smooth transition. 3. Expats should also research the healthcare system in Ghana to ensure they have access to quality medical care. 4. Expats should also consider the climate in Ghana and the availability of activities and amenities that suit their lifestyle. 5. It is also important to research the visa and residency requirements for expats in Ghana. 6. Expats should also consider the safety and security of the area they plan to retire in," said one person in Ghana.

"Housing is extremely expensive so make sure that your company provides adequate housing allowance as even the most expensive properties are of low quality. If you do not have an adequate housing allowance you might end up in a not very pleasant part of town and in a house that is virtually uninhabitable. Cost of living here is generally very expensive," remarked one expat in Accra.

What do I need to know before moving to Ghana?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Ghana, they said:

"Before moving to Ghana, expats should familiarize themselves with the local language, Twi, as it is the most widely spoken language in the country. Expats should also research the cost of living in Ghana, as prices can vary significantly depending on the area. Additionally, expats should be aware of the cultural norms and customs of Ghana, such as the importance of respect for elders and the traditional greeting of shaking hands. It is also important to be aware of the political climate in Ghana, as it can affect the safety and security of expats. Finally, expats should research the healthcare system in Ghana and consider purchasing health insurance to cover any medical expenses," said a person living in Ghana.

When we asked people living in Ghana about club and activities where newcomers can meet others, they responded:

"There are plenty of expat organisations and groups with various interests - gym, swim club, bridge, golf. movies etc. No matter what your interest you are bound to find a group to join or you can easily form one. Join those groups that interest you. For ladies NAWA is an excellent resource, so is expataccra," remarked one expat in Accra.

"Expats in Ghana often join clubs and activities such as golf, tennis, and sailing. Expats can also join book clubs, language classes, and other social activities. Additionally, expats can meet people by attending local events such as festivals, concerts, and art exhibitions. Expats can also meet people by attending church services, joining a gym, or volunteering with a local charity. Finally, expats can meet people by simply striking up conversations with locals in cafes, bars, and other public places," explained one expat living in Ghana.

What should I bring when moving to Ghana?

"When moving to Ghana, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Bring clothing that is lightweight and breathable, as well as items that will protect you from the sun. It is also important to bring items that will help you stay connected to your home country, such as a laptop, phone, and any necessary chargers. Additionally, it is a good idea to bring a few items that will help you adjust to the local culture, such as books about Ghanaian history and culture, and a few items that will help you learn the local language. Finally, don't forget to bring any necessary medications and toiletries," explained one expat.

Where should I setup a bank account in Ghana?

We asked expats in Ghana what banks they use and there advice about banking. They advised:

"Before retiring in Ghana, expats should research the cost of living in the area they plan to live in. They should also familiarize themselves with the local culture and customs, as well as the language. It is important to understand the healthcare system and to make sure that they have access to quality medical care. Additionally, expats should research the local banking system and the availability of international banking services. It is also important to understand the tax system and to make sure that they are compliant with all applicable laws. Finally, expats should make sure that they have a valid visa and that they are aware of any restrictions on their stay," remarked one expat in Ghana.

Will I be able to find a job in Ghana?

When we asked people about industries and career opportunities in Ghana, they reponded:

"Oil, gas, mining, breweries, and cocoa industries are the main industries. Senior management or technical positions are the major career opportunities but work visas are limited so generally need to be very senior or have unique skills. Jobs are usually advertised on overseas websites or people are promoted within," explained one expat.

"Foreigners often have jobs in Ghana in a variety of fields, such as teaching, engineering, business, and hospitality. They may also work in the medical field, as doctors, nurses, or other medical professionals. Additionally, many foreigners find employment in the oil and gas industry, as well as in the banking and finance sector. Other popular job opportunities for foreigners include working in the tourism industry, as tour guides or in other related roles," said one person in Ghana.

What is life like in Ghana?

When we asked people living in Ghana what life is like and how people spend their time, they said:

"Life for expats and digital nomads in Ghana is generally positive. The country is known for its friendly people, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes. Expats and digital nomads can find a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury apartments to budget-friendly hostels. The cost of living is relatively low, making it an attractive destination for those looking to stretch their budget. The country also offers a variety of activities and attractions, from exploring the bustling markets to visiting the many national parks. With its excellent infrastructure, reliable internet, and growing expat community, Ghana is an ideal destination for those looking to experience a new culture and lifestyle," explained one expat.

"Everyone that works are usually pretty busy with it but there is also a lot os socialising with many functions a week on in town. We find we have to pick and choose what to do as otherwise there is just too much to do," said one person in Accra.

What do expats in Ghana appreciate most about the local culture?

"Expats in Ghana appreciate the warm hospitality of the local people, the vibrant culture and the beautiful landscapes. They also enjoy the delicious local cuisine, the vibrant music and dance, and the rich history and traditions. Additionally, expats appreciate the strong sense of community and the welcoming atmosphere in Ghana," remarked one in Ghana.

What do expats find most challenging?

"People here only tell you what you want to hear not the real situation - leading to not being able to trust anyone," explained one expat living in Accra.

"Expats in Ghana often find the local culture to be quite different from what they are used to. Many find the language barrier to be a challenge, as English is not widely spoken outside of the major cities. Additionally, the local customs and traditions can be difficult to understand and navigate. Expats may also find the pace of life to be slower than what they are used to, as well as the lack of modern amenities and infrastructure. Finally, the hot and humid climate can be difficult to adjust to," said one expat in Ghana.

Is there a lot of crime in Ghana?

We asked people if there is a lot of crime. They answered:

"Crime is a problem in Ghana, with reports of theft, robbery, and violent crime occurring in both urban and rural areas. The government has taken steps to address the issue, including increasing police presence in areas with high crime rates and introducing tougher penalties for certain offenses. However, the crime rate remains high, and citizens are advised to take extra precautions when travelling in Ghana," said one person in Ghana.

Is there a lot of diversity? Are people in Ghana accepting of differences?

"Yes, there is a lot of diversity in Ghana. The country is home to many different ethnic groups, including Akan, Ewe, Ga, and Dagomba. People in Ghana are generally accepting of differences and celebrate the diversity of their culture. Ghana is known for its hospitality and welcoming attitude towards visitors from all backgrounds," said a person living in Ghana.

"Yes - within the local community there are Christian (Apostles) and Islam and Expats are from around the world. There are also many Africans from other nations. Tolerance is generally very high however, there is a tendency to take advantage of Expats within Accra and they are not as welcoming and friendly as Ghanians from the country," explained one expat living in Accra.

What are the schools in Ghana like?

"The American International School of Accra (AISA) is one of the best international schools in Ghana. It is an independent, co-educational day school offering an American-style curriculum for students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. AISA is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Ghana Education Service. The school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and drama. The Lincoln Community School (LCS) is a bilingual school in Accra, Ghana. It is an independent, co-educational day school offering an American-style curriculum for students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. LCS is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Ghana Education Service. The school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and drama. It also offers a variety of language classes, including French, Spanish, and Mandarin. The Ghana International School (GIS) is another top international school in Ghana. It is an independent, co-educational day school offering an American-style curriculum for students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. GIS is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Ghana Education Service. The school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, and drama. It also offers a variety of language classes, including French, Spanish, and Mandarin," commented one expat when asked about in Ghana.
