"Life for a retiree in Makarska Riviera, can be quite idyllic and relaxed. The region is known for its stunning natural beauty, including pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, and the impressive Biokovo mountain range. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters, making it a pleasant place to live year-round. There is a small but active expat community in Makarska Riviera, with retirees from various European countries choosing to settle here. The locals are generally friendly and welcoming, and while not everyone speaks English, it is commonly understood in tourist areas and among younger generations. Cultural attractions abound in Makarska Riviera and its surroundings. The town of Makarska itself has a charming old town area with a Franciscan monastery that houses a shell museum, and a bustling marketplace. Nearby, the cities of Split and Dubrovnik offer a wealth of historical and cultural sites, including the Diocletian's Palace and the Dubrovnik Old Town, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Recreational opportunities are plentiful in the region. The beautiful beaches and clear waters are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. The Biokovo mountain range offers excellent hiking and biking trails, and the opportunity to explore the Biokovo Nature Park. Boat trips to the nearby islands of Hvar, Brac, and Korcula are also popular. Nightlife in Makarska Riviera is relatively low-key, reflecting the relaxed pace of life in the region. There are a number of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy local wines and cuisine, and during the summer months, there are often live music performances in the town square. For those seeking a more lively nightlife scene, the city of Split is just a short drive away and offers a variety of clubs and entertainment venues.
