What advice do overseas retirees have for others considering retiring abroad?

"Retirees in Yeosu advise others considering retiring abroad to thoroughly research the cost of living in their chosen destination, as it can vary greatly from their home country. They suggest learning the local language, at least at a basic level, to help with daily tasks and socializing. It's also important to understand the healthcare system and ensure you have adequate coverage. They recommend visiting the location multiple times before making a final decision, to get a feel for the culture, climate, and lifestyle. They also suggest making connections with locals and other expats, as they can provide valuable insights and support. Lastly, they advise being open-minded and adaptable, as living in a new country can present unexpected challenges and opportunities," said a person in Yeosu.

What are the most challenging aspects of retiring in Yeosu?

"One of the most challenging aspects of retiring in Yeosu could be the language barrier, as not everyone speaks English and communication could be difficult. The cost of living might also be higher than in other parts of Korea or compared to one's home country. Adapting to the local culture and customs could be another challenge, especially for those who are not familiar with Korean traditions. The healthcare system, while advanced, may also be difficult to navigate for non-Koreans. Additionally, the weather in Yeosu, which can be quite cold in the winter, might be a challenge for some retirees. Lastly, being far away from family and friends in one's home country could also be a significant challenge when retiring in Yeosu," commented one retiree living in Yeosu, Korea.

What do I need to know before retiring in Yeosu?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Yeosu, they said:

"Expats considering retirement in Yeosu should be aware of several factors. Firstly, they should have a basic understanding of the Korean language as English is not widely spoken in Yeosu. They should also be prepared for a high cost of living, especially in terms of housing and healthcare. The healthcare system in Korea is excellent but can be expensive, so it's important to have comprehensive health insurance. The climate in Yeosu is relatively mild, with four distinct seasons, but winters can be quite cold. The city is known for its seafood and beautiful coastal scenery, but it's less bustling and cosmopolitan than cities like Seoul or Busan. Public transportation is reliable and efficient, but having a car can be more convenient for exploring the surrounding areas. Korean culture places a strong emphasis on respect for elders, so retirees are generally treated well. However, it's important to familiarize oneself with Korean customs and etiquette to avoid any cultural misunderstandings. Finally, while Yeosu is a safe city, it's always important to be aware of one's surroundings and take standard precautions to protect personal safety and belongings," said a retiree who moved to Yeosu, Korea.
