What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Lucerne?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Lucerne about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to understand that Switzerland has a high standard of healthcare, so you can expect excellent prenatal and postnatal care. However, it can be expensive, so make sure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity costs. Secondly, you should familiarize yourself with the Swiss healthcare system. In Switzerland, you have the choice between public and private healthcare. Public healthcare is more affordable, but private healthcare offers more personalized care and shorter waiting times. Thirdly, it's recommended to find a good gynecologist or midwife early in your pregnancy. They will guide you through the pregnancy and help you make important decisions, such as where to give birth. Fourthly, consider taking prenatal classes. These classes can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood. They are often offered in English, so language should not be a barrier. Fifthly, if you're planning to give birth in a hospital, you should book a hospital room well in advance. Swiss hospitals are known for their high comfort level, but they can fill up quickly. Sixthly, be aware that Switzerland has strict rules about naming your child. The name must be approved by the civil registry office and it must not harm the child's well-being or be offensive. Lastly, after the birth, you need to register your baby at the local civil registry office within 14 days. You will need to bring several documents, including the birth certificate and your passports. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a very rewarding one," commented one expat who made the move to Lucerne, Switzerland.
