What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Mecca?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Mecca about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Saudi Arabia. The country has both public and private healthcare sectors, with the private sector often offering a higher standard of care. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. This is crucial as healthcare can be expensive, especially in the private sector. Find a good obstetrician and hospital that you trust. It's advisable to do this early in your pregnancy so you can attend regular check-ups and familiarize yourself with the hospital's procedures and facilities. Understand the cultural norms and customs in Saudi Arabia. The country is deeply rooted in Islamic traditions, which can influence aspects of childbirth and postnatal care. For example, it's common for babies to be swaddled and for mothers to stay at home for a period after the birth. Learn some basic Arabic phrases, especially those related to healthcare and pregnancy. While many healthcare professionals in Saudi Arabia speak English, communication can be easier if you know some of the local language. Respect the local customs and dress code. Women are expected to dress modestly in public, covering their hair and body. This applies even when you are going to the hospital for check-ups or the delivery. Prepare for the paperwork. Having a baby in another country often involves a lot of bureaucracy. You will need to register the birth with both the local authorities and your home country's embassy to ensure your child's citizenship rights. Finally, seek support from other expats. They can provide valuable advice and share their own experiences of having a baby in Saudi Arabia. There are numerous online forums and social groups where you can connect with other expat parents," said a member in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
