What do I need to know before retiring in Playa Grande?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Playa Grande, they said...

"Expats considering retirement in Playa Grande should be aware that the cost of living can be higher than in other parts of Costa Rica due to its popularity as a tourist destination. They should also know that the official language is Spanish, so learning the language can be beneficial, although English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Healthcare in Costa Rica is of a high standard and affordable, but it's recommended to have a comprehensive health insurance. The country has a tropical climate, with a wet and dry season, and Playa Grande can be particularly hot and humid. Playa Grande is known for its strong sense of community, so expats should be prepared to get involved in local events and activities. The area is also a renowned surfing spot, and outdoor activities are a big part of life in Playa Grande. Expats should be aware that while Costa Rica is generally safe, petty crime such as theft can be an issue, so it's important to take precautions. In terms of housing, it's possible to buy property in Costa Rica as a foreigner, but it's recommended to rent first to get a feel for the area. Finally, expats should understand that while Costa Rica has a slower pace of life which many retirees enjoy, this can also mean that services and processes may not be as efficient as they are used to," commented one expat who made the move to Playa Grande, Costa Rica.
