Are foreigners allowed to own property in Mal Pais?
When we asked expats in Mal Pais if foreigners are allowed to own property, they answered...
"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in Mal Pais. The Costa Rican government has established a legal framework that allows foreign citizens to purchase and own real estate in the country. This framework is known as the "Fideicomiso" and it allows foreign citizens to purchase and own property in Costa Rica without having to obtain residency. The Fideicomiso is a trust agreement between the foreign citizen and a Costa Rican bank, which acts as the trustee. The bank holds the title to the property on behalf of the foreign citizen, and the foreign citizen is granted the right to use and enjoy the property," explained one expat living in Mal Pais, Costa Rica.
