Driving from Florida with a medium size dog to Playa del Carmen?

I'm sure this has been addressed a lot but a good or bad idea?

Appears importing a US vehicle has challenges and potentially long-term costs, complexities and liabilities. The area I'm looking at seems very walk friendly and long term a potential unneeded expense.

I do wish to explore a bit before locking a final location and may end up in a more rural location so having transportation has short and potentially long benefit.

My intent is to stay for 3-4 month and see if it's a fit for a full relocation. I have been there vacationing many times but in resort environment(s). I want to experience the actual day to day normal living condition as much as possible.

Any input would be most appreciated.
Cheers
