Summary: Learn about the health system in Ubud: how it can and cannot be used by expats, nomads, retirees and others moving to and living in Ubud.

Ubud has a mix of public and private healthcare facilities. The public healthcare system, known as BPJS Kesehatan, is available to both locals and foreigners, while private hospitals offer more specialized care and are often preferred by expats.

Indonesia's Healthcare System

Indonesia's public healthcare system, BPJS Kesehatan, is available to both locals and foreigners. However, public hospitals in Ubud are not typically recommended for serious medical emergencies or major surgeries due to limited resources and long waiting times. Public hospitals in Ubud can be crowded and may not have the same level of care as private hospitals. Foreigners, including expats and digital nomads, are allowed to use the public healthcare system in Indonesia, but many prefer to use private hospitals for better quality care and shorter waiting times. Private hospitals are generally recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgeries, as they offer more specialized care and better facilities.

Hospitals and Clinics for Expats in Ubud

Some recommended clinics and hospitals in Ubud include:

  • BIMC Hospital Ubud (private) - located in the center of Ubud, offers a range of medical services including emergency care and dental services.
  • Kasih Ibu Hospital Ubud (private) - located in the center of Ubud, provides general medical care and specialist services.
  • Puskesmas Ubud II (public) - a public health center located in Ubud, offering basic medical services.

If more specialized care or surgeries are required, expats in Ubud may need to travel to nearby cities such as Denpasar, which is approximately 1-1.5 hours away by car.

Emergency Services in Ubud

There are ambulance services in Ubud, which can be called by dialing 118. However, response times can vary and there may be delays due to traffic or other factors. In some cases, it may be faster to arrange private transportation to a hospital in case of an emergency.

Health Insurance Companies in Ubud

Popular private health insurers in Ubud include Allianz, AXA, and Prudential. These companies offer a range of health insurance plans for locals and foreigners. Expats and digital nomads may also choose to use specialized expat health insurance providers, which cater specifically to their needs and may offer more comprehensive coverage for medical care in Indonesia and abroad.
