Parent's Review of NIS (Netherlands) International School in Jakarta, Indonesia

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

NIS (Netherlands) International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Jakarta

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

toddlers-primary6

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Private cars, some ride bikes too

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

A lot of work has been done to improve the facilities over the last year. Smartboards in Primary classes, increased computer facilites, improved playing areas.

It's most like a western playground with open green areas and bike riding area for the younger children.

A large variety of after school activities. My child is doing great in the swimming and music after school lessons.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

They have a transition program for grade 6 children who complete their Dutch exams in February, giving them full english lessons to then sit the Cambridge exams in May. This means the Dutch children can achieve both the dutch primary exit exams and the International Cambridge exit exams.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

A PTA was established this year. This seems to be going well. The parents involved are very enthusiastic.

Each class also has a parent representative who works with the teacher for class activities. The school had a great christmas celebration where I brought the grand parents and my other children. Great fun! Also the school celebrated Sinterklaas at school and at Taman Mini.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

I think it was a surprise. I was expecting only Dutch education but found that NIS has a complete International Stream as well! It has a small community family feel with really great teachers and staff. Its worth a look.
