An Expat Talks about Retiring in Santa Ana, Costa Rica

Submitted by Ducko

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Santa Ana

Describe available transportation where you live. Do you need a car? Is there access to safe public transportation?

Traffic can be a challenge and there are many crazy drivers and daring motorcycle riders there so be cautious. Many people will pull out in front of you but you will also find many gracious drivers that will stop and flash their lights to allow you to make a turn or enter traffic. Cars can be expensive and the government requires that you pay two yearly fees, Machamo (tax) and Riteve (Safety Inspection). There are many bad and narrow roads throughout the country although it is improving. Lots of toll booths charging about .65 but yearly quick pass is available and recommended. I used a great shuttle van company to travel around the country and highly recommend them Caribe Shuttle https://www.caribeshuttle.com/ They have a great web site, offer numerous destinations and it is very inexpensive. Vans are air conditioned and have Wi-fi. They will even provide a guide that helps guide you through the border crossing which is big help.
