Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Colombia.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Colombia.

Requirements for a Foreigner to Legally Drive in Colombia

In Colombia, foreigners can legally drive with their home country's driver's license for a certain period. However, if the driver's license is not in Spanish, it is recommended to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official translation. After a specific time, a Colombian driver's license becomes mandatory.

Requirements Based on City, State, or Region

The driving rules and license requirements are generally the same across Colombia, as they are regulated at the national level by the Ministerio de Transporte. However, specific cities or regions may have local traffic regulations, so it's essential to familiarize yourself with those.

Process for Obtaining a Colombian Driver's License

If a foreigner resides in Colombia for more than three months and plans to drive, they must obtain a Colombian driver's license. Here is a detailed process:

  • Valid Identification: Obtain a Colombian ID (Cédula de Extranjería) from Migración Colombia if you don't have one already.
  • Schedule an Appointment: Visit the Registro Único Nacional de Tránsito (RUNT) website or office to schedule an appointment for the driving test.
  • Medical Exam: Undergo a medical exam by a certified doctor to obtain a fitness certificate for driving (Certificado Médico de Aptitud Física y Mental).
  • Driving School: Enroll in a driving school (optional but recommended) to prepare for the theoretical and practical exams.
  • Theoretical Exam: Take the theoretical exam at the designated location. It is a multiple-choice test covering traffic rules, regulations, and road signs.
  • Practical Exam: After passing the theoretical exam, schedule and take the practical driving test.
  • License Application: Once you pass both exams, apply for the driver's license at the RUNT office. You will need to submit the following documents:
    • Passport and a copy of the biographical page.
    • Colombian ID (Cédula de Extranjería) and a copy.
    • Medical fitness certificate.
    • Proof of passing the theoretical and practical exams.
    • Payment receipt for the license fee.
  • License Issuance: After submitting the documents and paying the fee, you will receive your Colombian driver's license.

It is crucial to follow these steps to ensure you are legally allowed to drive in Colombia. Always check with local authorities for any updates or changes in the process.
