To move or not to move....that is the question?

Hi

I wondered if you might be able to give me some advice on living in Nicaragua.

My partner Oscar is a native Nicaraguan, living in London with me (he has been here about 7 years) and is now wanting to return to Nicaragua to pursue his dream of becoming a Pilot. He is 29 so under some pressure to get on with this career change.

He wants me to go with him, and obviously I don't want to do a long distance relationship since we've been living together nearly 3 years, so I wondered exactly what the living situation is like for Brits and English speakers in Nicaragua.

I am 23, about to embark on a year Diploma at a reputable Interior Design college and have a background in administration -particularly in financial services - but have previously studied a degree in architecture (up to 2nd year) and have also a Secretarial Diploma, I was wondering what kind of job opportunities might there be for me. I have very broken Spanish (still learning) and so I guess my first year I would dedicate to studying the language properly, but after that....I'm not sure what else there is for me.

I visited Nicaragua for 3 weeks over Christmas last year, I travelled almost everywhere and can see that there are parts that are stunning, but I am also aware that there are serious problems with infrustructure, crime, legal system, employment and general environment. I found the centre of Managua particularly off-putting. And yet it would be an adventure, I have always wanted to live outside of the UK and there are lost of people who have settled in Latin America who have successful businesses and a good lifestyle....I am just wondering, what kind of people are these? Is there a community and support for people immigrating? Can young people have a life here (by which I mean not just temporary back-packing)?

I've always wanted to have my own company, I am ambitious and business-minded. In some sense, with the state of the Economy in Europe, an EM country would probably be one of the only places I could afford to set up my own business, but is that realistic or am I dreaming....
