Real Estate in Australia

By Betsy Burlingame

Last updated on Sep 08, 2023

Summary: An expat looking to buy a home in Australia should begin by researching the local real estate market and familiarizing themselves with the different types of properties available. They should also consider their budget and the type of amenities they are looking for in a home. When searching for a home to buy in Australia, expats should consider the location, size, and features of the property. They should also consider the local amenities, such as schools, parks, and public transportation. Homes in Australia typically include features such as air conditioning, modern appliances, and outdoor areas. Some homes may also include a pool, spa, or other luxury amenities. Foreigners are allowed to purchase property in Australia, however, there are restrictions on the type of property they can buy. Foreigners are generally not allowed to purchase existing residential dwellings, but they can purchase vacant land, new dwellings, and off-the-plan dwellings.

How do I find a place to live in Australia?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Australia is to research online. Popular websites such as realestate.com.au, Domain, and flatmates are great places to start looking for rentals and share housing alike. Another option is to enlist the help of a local real estate agent in the area who can give you an up-to-date overview of the current housing market. Additionally, joining local Facebook groups and online communities devoted to the areas you are interested in can give you firsthand information from other locals. Finally, search and connect with Australians on social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. to source contacts and get recommendations," explained one person living in Australia.

"Neighborhood by walking around in it. Looked through the Sydney Morning Herald website for homes; talked to real estate agents," said one expat in Sydney.
