What do I need to know before moving to Macao?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Macao, they said:

"Before moving to Macao, expats should become familiar with the local languages. Macanese is the prevailing dialect, and most locals speak Cantonese and Portuguese as well. Mandarin is also widely spoken due to the influence of mainland China. Expats should also be aware that Macao is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, so Chinese laws and regulations, such as restrictions on religion, censorship and hukou registration, also apply. Additionally, the cost of living in Macao is quite high compared to other parts of China, so expats should make sure to budget for extra expenses. Lastly, Macao is always teeming with tourists, so expats should prepare for a busy and bustling lifestyle," said one expat who made the move to Macao, China.
