What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Palma de Mallorca?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Palma de Mallorca about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Spanish healthcare system. Spain has a high standard of healthcare and many doctors and nurses speak English, but it's always beneficial to learn some basic Spanish medical terms. Secondly, you should register with a local doctor as soon as possible. They can guide you through the process of prenatal care in Spain, which includes regular check-ups and ultrasounds. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Fourthly, be aware that the birth culture in Spain may be different from your home country. For example, epidurals are very common and there is a high rate of C-sections. Fifthly, ensure you understand the paperwork involved. You will need to register the birth within a few days at the local registry office. Lastly, take advantage of the local support networks. There are many expat groups and parenting classes available in Palma de Mallorca, which can provide invaluable advice and companionship. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a daunting experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be an incredibly rewarding one," commented one expat who made the move to Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
