What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Puerto Viejo?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Puerto Viejo about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Costa Rica. The country has a universal healthcare system, but many expats also choose to have private insurance. You should research and decide what's best for your family. Secondly, find a good local doctor or midwife who speaks your language and understands your cultural expectations about childbirth. This will make the process much smoother and less stressful. Thirdly, be prepared for the possibility of needing to travel for certain medical services. While Puerto Viejo has basic healthcare facilities, you may need to travel to a larger city for more specialized prenatal care or for the delivery, if complications arise. Fourthly, make sure you understand the legal requirements for registering the birth and getting a passport for your baby. This can be a complex process, especially if you're not fluent in Spanish, so it might be worth getting professional help. Fifthly, consider the practicalities of raising a baby in Puerto Viejo. This is a small town with limited resources, so you might need to travel to a larger city to buy certain baby supplies. Lastly, connect with other expat families in the area. They can offer advice, support, and friendship, which can be invaluable when you're navigating the challenges of having a baby in a foreign country," wrote a member who made the move to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica.
