What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Samana?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Samana about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Samana, Dominican Republic. The country has both public and private healthcare, with the latter often providing a higher standard of care. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. Some insurance policies may not cover these, or may require a waiting period before coverage begins. Find a reputable obstetrician and hospital for your prenatal care and delivery. You may want to ask for recommendations from other expats or locals. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Learn about the local customs and practices related to pregnancy and childbirth. This can help you understand what to expect and can also show respect for the local culture. Ensure you have a solid support system in place. Being an expat can sometimes be isolating, especially during a major life event like having a baby. Prepare for the possibility of a language barrier. Not all medical professionals in the Dominican Republic may speak English fluently, so it may be helpful to learn some Spanish medical terms or have a translator available. Lastly, make sure your legal paperwork is in order. This includes ensuring your baby will have the correct citizenship and that their birth is properly registered," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Samana, the Dominican Republic.
