What should I pack when moving to Kingston?
We asked people living in Kingston to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded...
"When moving to Kingston, it is important to pack items that will help you adjust to the climate and culture. Pack light, comfortable clothing that is suitable for the warm, tropical climate. Bring items such as sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat to protect you from the sun. Additionally, it is important to bring items that will help you adjust to the culture, such as books about Jamaican history and culture, and items that will help you learn the language. Don't forget to bring any necessary documents, such as your passport and visa. Finally, it is important to bring items that will make you feel at home, such as photos of family and friends, and items that will help you relax and enjoy your new home," remarked another expat who made the move to Kingston, Jamaica.
"Definitely ship your goods over - furniture etc in JA is very, very expensive and to be honest there isn't a great deal of choice. It is possible to find some great hand-carved furniture but generally I found it too heavy, ornate, and not quite to my taste. I thought that I could sell my goods in the UK and use the proceeds to replace them in JA, but the resale value just wasn't sufficient to cover the costs of buying new. Do shop around for reliable, and low cost shippers though," explained one expat living in Kingston, Jamaica.
