As a foreigner living in Malaga, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Malaga if they have access to public healthcare in Malaga. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Malaga, you will have access to public healthcare. Spain has a well-developed healthcare system, and Malaga is no exception. The public healthcare system in Spain is free at the point of service for anyone living and working in the country. This includes foreigners who are residents in Spain. The healthcare system in Malaga, like the rest of Spain, is of a high standard. The hospitals are well-equipped and the doctors are highly trained. Many healthcare professionals in Malaga also speak English, which can be helpful for foreigners. However, it's important to note that while emergency care is available to everyone, including tourists, access to non-emergency care and specialist treatments may require you to be registered with the Spanish social security system. This typically involves having a job in Spain or being a dependent of someone who does. In addition, while public healthcare is generally good, some people choose to take out private health insurance for more immediate access to specialists and to avoid potential waiting times for certain procedures. Overall, the public healthcare system in Malaga is reliable and accessible, but it's important to ensure you're properly registered and understand how the system works," remarked another expat who made the move to Malaga, Spain.
