As a foreigner living in Spanish Town, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Spanish Town if they have access to public healthcare in Spanish Town. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Spanish Town, you will have access to public healthcare. Jamaica's healthcare system is a mix of public and private providers. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and is available to all residents, including foreigners. However, it's important to note that while public healthcare is free at the point of delivery, it is often characterized by long waiting times and limited resources. The healthcare facilities in Spanish Town, like the Spanish Town Hospital, offer a range of services but may not have the same level of equipment and specialists as hospitals in larger cities. Therefore, for serious or complex medical issues, you may need to travel to Kingston or another major city. Many expatriates and wealthier Jamaicans choose to use private healthcare, which offers a higher standard of care and shorter waiting times, but at a higher cost. It's also common for people to have private health insurance to cover these costs. Pharmaceuticals are widely available, but it's advisable to bring a sufficient supply of any prescribed medication you may need, as specific brands may not be available. Overall, while you will have access to public healthcare in Spanish Town, it's advisable to also consider private healthcare options or health insurance for a more comprehensive coverage," explained one expat living in Spanish Town, Jamaica.
