As a foreigner living in Zihuatanejo, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Zihuatanejo if they have access to public healthcare in Zihuatanejo. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"As a foreigner living in Zihuatanejo, you will have access to public healthcare, but it's important to note that the quality and availability of services can vary. The public healthcare system in Mexico is known as the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). It provides a wide range of services, from general consultations to surgeries and emergency care. However, public hospitals and clinics can be crowded and wait times can be long. The standard of care can also vary, with facilities in larger cities generally offering better services than those in rural areas. Many expats choose to use private healthcare, which is more expensive but typically offers a higher standard of care and shorter wait times. It's also worth noting that while some doctors and nurses in Mexico speak English, this is not always the case, so there may be a language barrier to consider. It's recommended that foreigners living in Mexico consider getting health insurance to cover the cost of private healthcare," commented one expat who made the move to Zihuatanejo, Mexico.
