An Expat Talks about What is Was Like Having a Baby in Playa Jaco, Costa Rica

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Playa Jaco

If a friend of yours living in the same country were expecting a baby, what advice would you give her?

It is important to have an experienced midwife or obstetrician for labour and delivery that is familiar with the culture, language and customs of the area, and to be aware of the laws and regulations that pertain to having a baby in Costa Rica. It is also important to ensure that the necessary vaccinations are up to date, to research any recommended medications or supplements, and to know the availability of resources (such as hospitals and help-lines) that may be needed. The quality of care and the level of medical coverage should also be carefully evaluated prior to any medical procedure or birth. It is also advisable to plan for all unforeseen costs, to have a comprehensive health insurance for mother and baby, and to develop an emergency plan if any complications arise. Finally, it is important to prepare for the emotional and practical transitions of having a baby abroad, and to make sure to connect with other mums in the area to get support and advice.
