Describe how you "dreamed" expat life would be before you moved overseas. Please provide as much detail as possible.

Initially, I expected life to be extremely different with maximum mental adjustments. However, as I settled in to the area I learned the life can be very similar. Moving to the Bahamas, the thought process is sunny skies and blue water. This did not disappoint. Weekends are like short vacations with all the tourist amenities at your disposal. Learning who is the best fit for me (or you) may take some time but we found our niche quickly. All in all, the atmosphere is what we expected.

How has your expat experience met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad?

Living the island life is just that. Beaches and the life are around every corner. Family and friends coming to visit and sharing the experience is fantastic. Cost of living is as expected, expensive. However, we prepared for this.

How has your expat experience NOT met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad?

Learning the underbelly of the Bahamas is quite eye opening. An incredibly rich country plagued with poverty and corruption. It is difficult to see the divide between political parties and lack of ability to get along and manage a country with so much to offer. This motivates me to treat my colleagues with respect and assist in job skills and promotion as much as possible.
