Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Hungary.
Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Hungary.
Requirements for a Foreigner to Legally Drive in Hungary
In Hungary, foreigners can drive using their domestic driver's license for a certain period, after which they need to obtain a Hungarian driver's license. The rules are uniform throughout the country, with no regional differences. Here are the key requirements:
Short-term Visitors
Foreigners visiting Hungary for less than one year can drive using their domestic driver's license. If the license is not issued in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a certified translation is required.
Long-term Residents
Foreigners living in Hungary for more than one year must obtain a Hungarian driver's license. Here's a detailed process to acquire one:
- Translation: Have your domestic driver's license translated into Hungarian by an official translator.
- Medical Examination: Undergo a medical examination at a licensed healthcare provider in Hungary. The examination includes general health, eyesight, and reaction time tests.
- Theory Exam: Pass a theory exam on traffic rules and regulations. The exam can be taken in English or with the help of an interpreter.
- Practical Exam: Pass a practical driving exam. The exam can be taken at a certified driving school or the Central Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services (KEKKH).
- Application: Submit the application form along with the following documents at the local KEKKH office:
- Valid passport or residence permit
- Translated domestic driver's license
- Medical examination certificate
- Theory exam certificate
- Practical exam certificate
- Address card (lakcímkártya)
- One passport-sized photograph
- Application fee payment receipt
- Issuance: Once the application is approved, the Hungarian driver's license will be issued and sent to the applicant's address.
It's essential to follow these steps to ensure legal driving in Hungary. Always check with the local authorities or the Hungarian Central Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services (KEKKH) for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
