Summary: Plan a day trip or weekend getaway to get some holiday cheer. This article highlights the best places to visit in Egypt for Christmas cheer.

For expats and digital nomads in Egypt looking to bask in the festive cheer, December offers a unique blend of traditional and modern celebrations. While Egypt may not be the first place that comes to mind for Christmas festivities, there are several spots where the holiday spirit is alive and well. From vibrant markets to festive events, here are some of the best places to visit in Egypt during the holiday season.

Cairo's Zamalek District

Zamalek, an affluent district in Cairo, is known for its cosmopolitan vibe and becomes particularly festive during December. The streets are adorned with Christmas lights, and many shops and cafes get into the spirit with decorations and seasonal offerings. The district hosts various Christmas bazaars, such as the popular Zamalek Christmas Festival, where you can find handmade crafts, holiday decorations, and international foods, typically held in mid-December. The festive atmosphere is complemented by carol singing and occasional visits from Santa Claus, making it a delightful place for families and friends to gather.

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to try the traditional Egyptian sweet, Kahk, a buttery cookie filled with nuts or dates, often dusted with powdered sugar and available at the bazaars.

Alexandria's Corniche

Alexandria, with its Mediterranean charm, offers a unique Christmas experience along the famous Corniche. The seaside promenade is lined with festive lights and decorations, creating a magical atmosphere. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a major cultural hub, often hosts Christmas concerts and events that showcase both local and international talent. The city's churches, such as St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral, hold special services and events that are open to the public, usually in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

We Recommend: Enjoy a stroll along the Corniche and take in the festive lights, then warm up with a cup of Sahlab, a traditional hot Egyptian drink made from milk, orchid root powder, and topped with cinnamon and nuts.

New Cairo's Community Markets

New Cairo is a modern area that has embraced the Christmas spirit with its community markets. These markets, such as the New Cairo Christmas Market, offer a variety of goods from local artisans, including Christmas ornaments, gifts, and festive foods. Held in early December, these markets are a great place to find unique gifts while enjoying the holiday atmosphere. Live music and entertainment often accompany the shopping experience, adding to the festive mood.

We Recommend: Look out for the traditional Egyptian Christmas drink, Qamar El-Din, made from apricot juice. It's a refreshing treat that's often enjoyed during the holiday season.

El Gouna's Marina

El Gouna, a resort town on the Red Sea, is particularly festive during December. The marina area becomes a winter wonderland with twinkling lights and Christmas decorations. The town hosts a variety of events, including the El Gouna Christmas Parade, which features floats, music, and dancers, typically taking place the weekend before Christmas. The parade is a highlight for both locals and visitors, creating a lively and joyous atmosphere.

We Recommend: After the parade, head to one of the marina's many cafes or restaurants for a festive meal, and be sure to try the local seafood, which is exceptionally fresh and well-prepared in El Gouna.

Luxor's Winter Palace

Luxor, known for its ancient Egyptian monuments, also offers a unique Christmas experience at the historic Winter Palace Hotel. The hotel, which overlooks the Nile River, is beautifully decorated for the season, and its gardens are a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. The Winter Palace often hosts a Christmas Eve gala dinner, complete with a festive menu and live entertainment, providing a luxurious setting to celebrate the holiday.

We Recommend: Indulge in the Winter Palace's Christmas Eve dinner, where you can enjoy a blend of international and Egyptian cuisine in a setting that harks back to the grandeur of a bygone era.

Sharm El-Sheikh's SOHO Square

Sharm El-Sheikh is a popular destination for those seeking winter sun, and SOHO Square is at the heart of the city's Christmas celebrations. The square is transformed with festive lights, decorations, and a large Christmas tree. Visitors can enjoy live shows, music performances, and even ice-skating, making it a fun destination for all ages. The Christmas market offers a range of holiday goods and gifts, and the restaurants in the area serve special holiday menus.

We Recommend: Don't miss the opportunity to go ice-skating at the rink in SOHO Square, a unique experience in the midst of the desert climate.

Cairo Festival City Mall

For those who prefer a more commercial Christmas experience, the Cairo Festival City Mall goes all out with its decorations and seasonal activities. The mall features a large Christmas tree, festive displays, and a variety of events for children, including workshops and visits from Santa Claus. The mall's many shops offer holiday sales, making it a great place to pick up last-minute gifts.

We Recommend: Take a break from shopping and enjoy the live Christmas-themed performances that are often held in the central court of the mall.

Downtown Cairo's Historic Streets

Downtown Cairo, with its historic architecture, offers a nostalgic Christmas atmosphere. The area around Talaat Harb Square is particularly festive, with shops and cafes displaying holiday decorations. The streets come alive with vendors selling seasonal treats and Christmas trinkets. The nearby churches, such as the Hanging Church in Coptic Cairo, hold special services and events that reflect the area's rich Christian heritage.

We Recommend: Visit the Hanging Church during one of its Christmas services to experience the spiritual side of the holiday in a historic setting.
