Health Insurance in Colombia
Summary: As you plan your move to Colombia, a key decision awaits: selecting the right health insurance. Should you go with local or expat coverage? This article explores the options and includes experiences shared by expats in Colombia, offering a glimpse into what might work best for you.
Colombia's healthcare system is renowned for its quality and affordability, ranking among the best in Latin America. Both public and private health insurance options are available, with the latter being more popular among expats and digital nomads due to its broader coverage and shorter wait times.
Health Insurance Companies in Colombia
Colombia has several prominent health insurance companies, known as Entidades Promotoras de Salud (EPS). Some of the most popular include SURA, Coomeva, and Sanitas. These companies offer a range of plans that cater to different needs and budgets. Expats are typically eligible to purchase health insurance from these companies, provided they have the necessary visa and residency status. SURA is known for its comprehensive coverage and wide network of healthcare providers, while Coomeva offers competitive prices and Sanitas is recognized for its specialized care services.
Expat Health Insurance in Colombia
Some expats living in Colombia opt to buy specialized expat health insurance. This is often because these plans provide international coverage, allowing globetrotters to maintain their insurance even as they travel or move between countries. Additionally, expat health insurance often includes benefits such as medical evacuation and repatriation, which can be crucial in case of emergencies.
Local Health Insurance vs. Expat Health Insurance
Whether expats and digital nomads choose local health insurance or specialized expat health insurance providers often depends on their specific circumstances. Those who plan to stay in Colombia long-term might opt for local insurance due to its affordability and extensive local networks. On the other hand, digital nomads or those who frequently travel might prefer the international coverage and additional benefits offered by expat health insurance providers.
Considerations When Deciding About Health Insurance Overseas
When deciding about health insurance while living overseas, it is essential to consider factors such as the extent of coverage, the network of healthcare providers, and the claims process. Some insurers may pay the bill directly, while others may require you to pay upfront and submit claims for reimbursement later. It is also crucial to consider any specific medical needs or conditions, as well as any plans for travel, to ensure that your chosen insurance plan provides adequate coverage.
Expats talk about Health Insurance in Colombia
"You can choose any health Ins company you want here, at a very reasonable price. Sanitas was recommended to me many years ago and I love it. My ambulance ride last year (5 hours) Hospital stay, and open Heart Surgery cost me $1 USD for the co-pay and never a deductable here," commented one expat living in Florencia, Colombia.
"Colombia is known for its high quality of private medical care and medical universities. Bucaramanga is well known for medical education and we have a plethora of hospitals and doctors. In my experience, prices are much cheaper here than the USA. eg. ACL surgery in the USA can run $60K to $80k, not including physical therapy. ACL surgery here is $5k including physical therapy," mentioned one expat living in Colombia.
