Carnival time in Portugal and lively processions can be found in many towns and villages. Carnival traditionally is the time for friviolity and feasting before lent begins. In this area, the best carnival procession can be seen in Torres Vedras, just a 40 - 45 minute drive to the north of Lisbon. Estoril and Cascais have a smaller carnival -- as does Malveira da Serra.

If you would like to travel from Loule in the Algarve, Batalha, Nazare, Ovar and Figueira da Foz are also known for their carnivals. To see unique carnivals, think of visiting Estarreja in Aveiro distric. The carnival here dates from the 19th century and has grown in size and popularity since the year 2000 when it was one of the biggest and best carnivals in the country -- having a children's procession, samba and many richly decorated floats.

Other places to visit having spectacular carnivals are Canas de Senhorim where there is fierce rivalry between the various 'bairros' of Paco and Rossio, Mascarados de Lazarim in Lamego.

Our choice and suggestion is:

Podence in the north, close to Braganca, is known as being one of the most original carnivals. Visit their web page and see their all history.

CARETOS OF PORTUGAL

Masked in fancy dress, the "Caretos" are the most enigmatic and seductive figures in Portugal. Although their natural habitat is the village of Podence, which is situated in Macedo de Cavaleiros, district of Braganca, they are in fact the main attraction in cultural festivities throughout the country and abroad.

The "Caretos" have been diabolic and mysterious figures ever since. They participate in festivities organised by farmers and seem to be an amalgam of profane, magical and religious elements, quite difficult to define.

The masked men show strength and vitality and have become mythical and sacred symbols, which are quite out of control because they come from nowhere in large noisy groups, spreading terror, excitement and laughter. Most of their fascination is due to their curious garments and ornaments. The "Caretos" are undoubtedly a unique and fascinating experience not to be missed.

Beware of the water or flour bombs (plastic bags filled with either) which are thrown at unsuspecting passers by. Enjoy the spectacle and have fun!!
