Episode 7: Diogo Capela, Internationally Recognized Immigration Lawyer in Portugal

Diogo Capela, founding partner of Lamares, Capela & Associados in Lisbon, discusses why so many people are drawn to Portugal, what it feels like to actually live there, and, drawing on his legal expertise, the visa pathways and residency options available to expats. From Portuguese food and culture to relocation strategy and practical guidance, this episode offers a thoughtful look at life in Portugal.

In this episode of Let the Adventure Begin!, we sat down with Diogo Capela, founding partner of Lamares, Capela & Associados, to talk about what it really takes to move to Portugal today—and what's changed.

Why Portugal Continues to Attract Expats

Portugal has been one of the most popular destinations for expats for years. Its combination of lifestyle, safety, climate, and relative affordability continues to attract people from around the world. But while Portugal remains highly appealing, the process of moving there has evolved.

According to Diogo, one of the biggest reasons Portugal continues to draw expats is its overall quality of life. Compared to many Western countries, it offers a more relaxed pace, access to beautiful coastal and historic areas, and a sense of accessibility that appeals to both retirees and younger remote workers. At the same time, Portugal has created structured legal pathways for relocation, which makes it more approachable than many other countries.

What's Changed Recently

However, that accessibility is changing.

Recent shifts in immigration policy have made the process more formal and, in some cases, more demanding. Some of the pathways that were previously more flexible now require stronger documentation, clearer intent, and better preparation before arrival. What may have worked even a few years ago is no longer a reliable approach.

Common Mistakes Expats Make

One of the most common mistakes people make, Diogo explained, is underestimating the process. Many assume they can arrive in Portugal and figure things out once they are there. Increasingly, that approach can create complications. Planning ahead—especially when it comes to documentation, timelines, and legal requirements—is now essential.

  • Arriving without a clear plan
  • Underestimating documentation requirements
  • Assuming older visa pathways still apply
  • Not preparing timelines in advance

What U.S. Expats Need to Know

For U.S. expats in particular, there are additional layers to consider. Tax planning plays a significant role in any move to Portugal. Understanding how Portuguese tax structures interact with U.S. obligations is critical, and making the wrong assumptions can lead to costly mistakes. Choosing the correct visa pathway is also more important than ever, as different options come with different requirements and long-term implications.

  • Understand U.S. tax obligations before moving
  • Evaluate visa options carefully
  • Plan finances with both countries in mind
  • Seek professional guidance early

Portugal Is Still Open—But Requires Planning

Despite these changes, Portugal remains one of the most accessible and appealing destinations for expats. The difference today is that the process requires more intention. It's no longer something that can be approached casually. Instead, it rewards those who take the time to plan, understand the system, and make informed decisions before they arrive.

As our conversation made clear, Portugal is still very much open—but success depends on preparation.

If you're considering a move, the best approach is to understand your options, get clear on your goals, and take the right steps early. Doing so can make the difference between a smooth transition and a stressful one.
