Finding Rentals in Santo Domingo

Hi all.
Well, I'll be in Santo Domingo in over a week and still nowhere to live yet. I have been let down a little on an apartment, but thats another story. I am looking on the net but everything looks so expensive, I find it difficult to believe that rentals are so expensive there. I can commit to 3 months and will most likely be there longer, these things will depend on how it all turns out, I've never been to Santo Domingo before although have spent alot of time on the NorthCoast. So, can anyone point me in the direction of a website or have any contacts where I might find some accom at such short notice. My Spanish is reasonable so I can communicate well with anyone, as long as the initial area is safe enough.
Also, can anyone tell me what these areas are like Gazcue, and district La Julia (within the university Zone, on Abe Lincoln Ave).
