Hotel room safe security question

I'd like to know whats the best way to keep your valuables (passport, laptop, small amount of extra cash) safe in your hotel room while travelling in the philippines. Is the safe in the hotel room really secure? Am I better off keeping these things on my person? Thanks in advance for your advise!
