Has Duterte changed the Relationship between the US and the Philippines

Post New Topic
Goslig

Why does the Philippines receive only $50 million in US military aid, while countries like Egypt, Jordan, and Pakistan receive lots more?
The Philippines dropped behind Vietnam as the country which loves America the most of all.. Until 2018 92% of Filipino’s loved America now only 87% do as Vietnam surpassed the Philippines as the country that loves America more than any other country in the world.
Will it get worse under Duterte?

A 2018 Pew Research Survey found that 84% of the Vietnamese lived America (the highest in the world) while only 78% of Filipino’s love America now down from 92%. The Philippines is in second place for countries that love America the most. I had to amend my previous topic post after seeing the Pew Research Survey. Is this because of Duterte?

Jordan and Turkey hate America more than any other country but we load them up with military aid way mire than the Philippines? Go figure.

Goslig, thanks for sharing that study. I was surprised mostly at the response from Vietnam. I can't think of a reason for that.

Anyway, my guess is that the slight drop from the Philippines is a result of Duterte as he doesn't seem to like America (although I don't know why). The majority do like Americans for many reasons including our shared history, our culture, and if for no other reason... most Filipino's have at least one relative that lives in America! lol.

Although I regret there are some American "jerks" living in RP, I think this is the exception rather than the rule. Most American expats (I hope) are good diplomats.

While for whatever reason Duterte doesn't like us, his senior military officers by far still do.

One other thing... that 50 million you are referring to is only "military" aid, and that even went up to 120 million in 2016. In addition to that we give them around 120 million in "development" aid each year. This is money politicians can put into their pockets to get rich while the people starve.

The U.S. has and continues to provide a great deal of money to the RP.

Philly & Gos - I totally get it. Duterte doesn't want the RP to be a major Nuke Target due to our placing Nukes there! I wouldn't want it either. Plus America has a bad record of abandoning it's Allies. Don't get me wrong - I am a True Blue Died In Da Wool Hard Core America Loving MAGA Conservative. But I also know both our Good and our Bad History. As any country, we don't have a perfect record. However, if Duterte thinks that the Russians and The Chinese love him - then he's been duped like a Fly by two very Big Spiders. They didn't even ask for a toothpick from him? So what? Those countries don't need his toothpicks! They want the Whole Enchilada - the Entire Country. I respect and admire DU30 - but I can't believe that he could possibly be THIS stupid. Question: In a Real Pinch, who values Philippine Freedom and Autonomy? Russia, China, or The USA? If anyone picks the first two - I will fall laughing on the floor. Did Russian or Chinese blood spill on Philippine soil defending the RP in WW II? No. Whose blood? American. Was Douglass MacArthur, who helped the RP get free from Japanese control and to recover, a Russian, Chinese or American? Right. And what Country set the RP free and helped her set up a Democratic Style Government in 1947? Russia, China, or America? How quickly these Myopic people forget. Makes me pretty angry.

darkfader24 Filipino’s love Americans second only to the Vietnamese, both more than any nation in the world. Obama’s Asia pivot, proposed before DU-30’s time, was supposed to station 60% of all Air Force and Naval assets and 100,000 troops in the Philippines. That deployment didn’t involve nukes. Trump changed that. Vietnamese have the same problem with China stealing their islands. Vietnamese have hated Chinese for generations. Filipino’s don’t like Chinese either. Filipino’s snatch children to sell to human organ industry in China. China also markets fake rice made from recycled plastic. But Iran is the new target, not China or North Korea.

Goslig - That is VERY Interesting. Did you mean Chinese snatch Filipino Children for their organ harvesting? You said that Filipinos do that. I have a very hard time believing that Pinoys would do such a horrific act. Fake Rice made from Plastic??!!?? Yuck - how awful - and poisonous - being that plastic comes from petroleum. Did Obama's Military Plan ever happen? It sounds like a reasonable one.

darkfader24 The Philippine National Police just rounded up a gang of older Filipina child mappers to harvest the children’s organs for the Chinese market, but Chinese sometimes helicopter into remote villages to snatch them. Big Chinese black market here for human (kiddie) organs. Trump thinks Mexicans are bad? Compared to the Chinese they are Angels. The Asia pivot deployment ended with Trump I assume he wanted to use the money to develop new weapon systems since he planned to cancel the tactical nuclear weapons treaty.

LovePhilly Duterte just buying time from China. Russian combat weapons pretty cool, but the Philippines has developed its own preferred style of automatic weapons that it now produces domestically. So the no-deal with America actually helped economically to start this industry. They are pretty cool jungle adapted water and mud proof Automatic rifles. Russian combat shotguns are awesome though.

Gos - I am in shock about this Child kidnapping thing. It is one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard of. I wish Duterte would create a special Force and spy on the areas most hit. I know - limited resources, a huge country with 7,000 Islands..... He needs to work out a plan with spy satellites, drones, human spies, whatever. He might not get them all but I'll bet he could do damage. If nothing is done, it will escalate. Follow the money. I am now sick to my stomach.

Gos - I am stunned that the Vietnamese are huge fans of America. In a way it makes sense. Sometimes people admire and love their enemies. We were certainly formidable, and they know why we lost. It was the Politicians running the War and the American people lost the will to win. I don't think we had any business being there in the first place - but if your going to play the game, play to win. Otherwise, you are wasting your youth in pointless bloodshed. Anyway, I like our Vietnamese people here in the States. Their Pho soup is amazing. I am addicted to it. Their sandwiches on a French Baguette are slammin'. And their women are stunning.

Dark, child kidnapping for many reasons exists. On Negros I had my suspicions of a few who turned up from time to time from Pakistan and other countries...oddly asking where remote villages were . They weren’t the hiking type.

I chased a few out of my mountainous areas saying “ the Pinoy tribes in the hills up here don’t like visitors, and hack limbs off with Bolo’s knives... don’t go up there . “ I hope I saved a few kids . God dam world is nuts .

Gosling, you’re right about China and searching for body parts in the Philippines, mainly from young kids. Like I said, I had my suspicions. So many kids on the street, swept into a van and gone on forever.
The real big operations are well-equipped with 4 x 4‘s and local intelligence. Some even have helicopters like you indicated.

I have always been beating the drum hear about China, And how they abuse the Philippines.Always for a reason. It’s almost too late. Fear them, they are closer than you think to domination.
Ask for millions of missing people that have gone to education camps with in mainland China. Never to be seen again. And here in Canada and United States and Brussels, they are worried about plastic straws. Unbelievable.

Actually on the topic, the biggest polluter of the oceans with plastic is without the China and India. Now, which media outlet has done investigative reporting on this? Probably none. The UN and the WTO , of which China is ironically a member, turn a blind eye to the plastic pollution of China and India.
Burden Western Europe and burden North America with silly plastic taxes, while real heathens, go unpunished.

The answer to that is, who cares? Duterte is a racist socialist. We can pour all the money we want into this place and it still would not matter.
His relationship with China goes back decades. All the hype about the Chinese screwing Filipinos over the South China Sea is to placate Filipinos so his daughter can get elected to his position when he leaves. He never had any intention to ride that jet ski out and plant a flag.

catabisis You couldn’t be more wrong. Duterte makes comments like the Jet Ski one as a play on words. Other leaders use words like “invasion” kind of tongue and cheek.. The Hague court ruled in favour of the Philippines against China which has also invaded 4 other Asian countries islands. I am not sure where you get your information.. Do you read the Liberal news media here? Do you live here? Duterte doesn’t want his daughter running for President and has stated it if you had read the news. His son is a Senator and Sarah is also running for a senate seat. Check her Facebook group for more accurate information though that group is named Sarah Duterte for President. It’s like saying Orphrey for President or Michelle Obama for President. Think whatever you like. But what you’re stating isn’t factual. Duterte did raise wages if police, teachers, soldiers and established free post secondary education like what is found in many democracies in Western Europe, but that’s not Socialism.

Has anyone noticed the full page ads that China regularly places in the newspapers?
Full of praise for how China is such a wonderful country, and how it does so much for the Phils. Along with this, they are taking over as much of the economy as they can and all of the cellphone system.
As for the Vietnamese, that is a comparative thing. The American GI's would do things like send out medics over uncleared roads to small villages to run impromptu clinics for the people. The soldiers were having their families in the states send over boxes of soap and other articles that were badly needed in these villages.
Everyone but the officers on those trips were volunteers. They never lacked volunteers to do this.
Do Communists do anything like this?
I kind of doubt it. The Vietnamese know genuine human kindness and generosity when they see it.

darkfader24 The older generation of Vietnamese who endured are still angry, but the younger generation sees progress through cultivating relationships with America. Cheap, furnished apartments with free maid service,WiFi, and amazing views from balconies are being built for the Expat market everywhere . It’s cheaper that the Philippines, and beautiful. Cambodia is still the cheapest of all, but is run by a former Khmer Rouge commander. It’s also against the law to have premarital sex there. No problem with that in the Philippines. Expats are leaving Thailand in droves too because of their changing flakey visa regulations. Many in Saigon were accepting of America’s role. I consider the Vietnamese much more industrious than Filipino’s. The men’s haircut salons are extremely pamper to their male clientele. I love their cuisine. There’s less English, but in many ways a far better country for Expat living in my opinion.

Guys, correct me if I am wrong but didn't Obama snub D30, not once but twice? Didn't D30 respond by saying some colorful words about OBAMA and the US.
Wasn't it shortly after that he announced that the RP was going to start a better relationship with both RUSSIA and CHINA.
Isn't it also true that a US Senator denounced the D30 regime for HUMAN RIGHTS violations and D30 responded in his usual way.
Isn't also true that DT called D30 and congratulated him on his victory and invited him to the White House and that DT drew the ire of many DEMS painting him as a friend of dictators.
Isn't also true that D30 responded favorably to Trump and said "he would go anywhere to meet Trump.
Thus the relationship that the US now has with the RP is far better than it ever was under OBAMA.
D30 knows now that the US is his biggest ally and would come to their defense.
Also in response to a post, the number 1 country that hates AMERICA is IRAN. This country along with CHINA pose the biggest threat to the US and the world.

Morgac- I dont think DU30 is a socialist , but maybe in some regards yes , he is at times ( ie Mandatory schooling for kids , Phil- health, et al ) . Socialist generally use "Political Correctness" is how the totalitarian Left take control of a society , the Euro 'EU' , Canada , and the USA (prior to trump) - come to mind . Political correctness and Diversity are KEY elements to leftist societal coercion. Its odd, Diversity is the left's second missile , however in reality there is NO Diversity at all in thought or vision. Try and have a diverse thought, or way, with the "Diversity Left people" - God help you ! "diversity " is a banner of the left , BUT it is the furthest from what they have in mind or will tolerate.

I dont see DU30 into the 'diversity dilution', nor is he politically correct . So I can't see him being a socialist . ANY politician can be bought ,or extorted , and China is trying dam hard in the RP . I hope DU30 pushes back on his upcoming meeting with Chaiman XI of China ( in two weeks? ) over China's illegal occupation of RP territory supported by the world courts - Haig, and the WTO . God help the RP !
Have a good day guys . going out with my sweetie today for a "rice Fever fix ' :)

The Canadian Embassy in the RP work day and night for a year to get Canada invited , for the first time .
What did our PM do ...FIRST thing he did at the Gala reception with DU30 present ....is lecture the RP on Human Rights abuses and how the RP was one of the worse . DU30 was pissed and was yelling and screaming at him .

Morgacj2004 I agree with your comment about Obama and Duterte. Same goes for Justin Trudeau of Canada who got their freighter full of rotting garbage back on July 1, Canada Day that had been sitting for 3 years in dockside storage. Some leaders get their North American P.C. ideas mixed up with Philippine reality. Then dump garbage here. Did Obama complain about North Korea (where the kill and hold hostage Americans), Russia or China? DU-30 has an 86% approval rating. The human rights abuses are done by Shabu dealers and their political handlers, like the former Liberal Minister of Justice now in jail. The Chinese human organ black market that targets poor kids in remote villages are worse. Duterte says “why should we pay to feed them?” Low overhead and simplicity a Pinoy tradition.

Surf. Duterte is being typically Filipino soft on China, and testing them because we all know what follows his threshold of tolerance. China needs the Philippines to keep out US bases and tactical nukes. Behind the scene however, Duterte needs the US military advisors to fight terrorism using their spy satellites. Some drones would be nice too. It’s a big chess board. Japan and a Australia provide lots of military aid to the Philippines too. Japanese and Chinese natural enemies. For US military bases, Vietnam is the country of choice. Navy Seals are training Vietnamese military for amphibious invasion to prepare them for reclaiming their islands from China.

We found hundreds of GI's......!

It would be ironic if the US would go back to Southeast Asia with military bases and frankly it would piss off CHINA because they fear our military presence in Southeast Asia. China already bemoans the fact that we have such a huge presence in Japan and SOKOR. Could you imagine if the US would ramp up military bases in the RP much like the 70/80"s era?

Nope. His foreign policy is still - China. Although ever since that boat-ramming incident, a lot of his supporters criticized him for not even making some indignation on the incident. Instead he showed some defeatism stance. Ever since this blowback from his blundering speeches, he now makes some weak statements that he will take up some issues with the Chinese govt. just to appease his supporters as well as his critics. Note: Even though he took care of his military and police force when he took office (by visiting every camp, giving his soldiers housing, increasing their pay, etc...), the PH Armed Forces are still pro-US. His pro-China stance all started when Obama criticized his War on Drugs program and the US Congress denied the arms sale to the Philippines.

As for Sarah, she wants to toughen the marshal law here in Davao, closing the courts and replacing them with military ones. She grooming herself as a strong woman and I am very leery about that.

Goslig - I agree , its a whole other world there ... but I was not aware of the mayor want MORE marshal law , other than non civilian courts( which is HUGE !) , what other changes does she want?

So far Marshal law has worked in Davao as it has been kept in check ... Sarah(the mayor) could be asking for too much control?

2. Socialism in the RP is different than Socialism in other parts f the world - surprised such a well read man did not know this . Much like Buddhism and is various sub-sets. RP socialism is a brand of its own. In practice DU 30 is not a PURE socialist but does come up with socialist themes at times .

what of his Nationalism catabisis - care to comment on this . Im interested in your opinion .

You have written very pro articles about China in the past - why do you like China? Are you an admirer of XI ? You dont like basic democracy ? Rubs you the wrong way ? You prefer people disappearing in the middle of the night ( millions) , like in China? Wonder if you ever lived in a small comity in China to see/feel their fright ?

Your an interesting guy . hope you answer some questions and shed light here !

Miriam D Santiago - ah yes ! , The " Iron Lady of Asia " . What a brilliant legal mind !

Here was her position on the Invasion of China.
"She stressed during a live debate that the West Philippine Sea is a sovereign territory of the Philippines and that the country should have a better military , stronger military and police force and assets, and should prioritize enhancing ties with allied nations such as the US and Western Countries , and especially in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). She was one of the international law experts who criticized deeply and regularly China, at every turn , and aided in the Philippine case against China before the international courts. She knew the deep threat China posed to every Filipino and S E Asia. The case against China was won by the Philippines in 2016. Despite this, China still does not recognize the ruling, and even fortified their position in the Philippines and other ASEAN countries . "

surfingcebu Yes Mariam has one of the best fighting intellects and voices I have ever heard. Except for her health limitations she would have beat Duterte easily. She spearhead maternal health policies, pushing back at the Catholic Church. Now condoms are available at health clinics and women can get IUD’s. Before there were so many deaths of newborns and their mothers because the Liberal government was too cheap to pay for the Jeepney ride to a Paanakan clinic. The Catholic Church would also cancel the scholarship if the young woman got pregnant. Now there is free University education for all.

I have found it interesting that a couple of the educated ladies I was speaking with ask me why I wanted to live there. I said all the wonderful things about their country, and they on their own said will its changing and not for the good. I said what are you talking about, and they said the Chinese were taking over, and they do not treat the people as well as Western nations. I said why do you think it is happening, and they said our President is owned by China and lots of our government they own. I did not start this topic, so interesting they brought it up.
