Planning to leave the US in 2014

Hello all,

I'm going to leave the US and travel to Thailand in 2014. I plan to spend a couple of weeks in BKK getting my tourist visa and such. Then i'm going to need to look for a place to live during my extended stay in Thailand.

I want to experience the raciness of BKK for a bit, but then after that im looking for a more laid back environment to live in. I would like to keep my expenses low to save money while i'm here but not so much that i'm living in a grass hut with no indoor plumbing.

I'm hearing that Chiang Mai is nice and not overly expensive. However im not so sure that might be the answer as I want to experience Thai culture and learn more about the country.

Also im vegetarian, I would like to keep being vegetarian while in Thailand, but i'm reading that most places do not have kitchens and that street food is the way to go. Do they serve large quantities of vegetarian street food in Thailand?
