No need to cancel travel to Thailand

Although many countries are warning their nationals to stay away from Thailand, that does not mean that it is unsafe to visit Thailand at this time. If you stay away from protest areas you might not even know that there is any political upheaval going on. . The protests to date have had some minor outbreaks of violence (relatively speaking and not to underplay the deaths and injuries that have occurred), but having lived in this country for nearly 40 years, the protest areas can be pretty easily avoided (and it is strongly recommended that foreigners stay away from them). For example where I live, I would not know there are any protests going on if I did not follow the news. The public transport modes in many cases do not want to go to protest areas, so taxis and tuk-tuks will avoid them. In Bangkok there are 7 major protest areas. main protest areas are the
1. The Government Park on Chaengwatthana Road.
2. the 5 way intersection at Lard Prao Road,
3. Victory Monument,
4. Ratchprasong Area,
5. Pathumwan Area,
6. Asoke-Sukhumvit Intersection
7. Lumpini Park Area. ,
There are of course risks that there might be spillover into other areas, and there is likely to be a general election scheduled for 2 February 2014, but It is very possible to avoid the protests and still have a good time in Thailand.
