What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Nantes?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Nantes about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the French healthcare system, which is one of the best in the world. Pregnant women in France are well cared for, with regular check-ups and ultrasounds as standard. Ensure that you have the right health insurance. If you are working in France, you will be covered by the French social security system, which covers most of the costs related to pregnancy and childbirth. Find a good obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language, as this will make the process much easier. Many doctors in France speak English, but it's always better to confirm this beforehand. Consider taking prenatal classes. These are a great way to prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and it's also a good opportunity to meet other expectant parents in Nantes. If you prefer a home birth or a birth in a birthing center, make sure to research your options early on, as these are less common in France and may require more planning. Remember to register the birth at the local town hall (mairie) in Nantes within three days of the baby being born. Both parents usually need to be present for this. Finally, try to learn as much as you can about the cultural norms and expectations around pregnancy and childbirth in France. This will help you to feel more prepared and less stressed about the whole process," remarked another expat in Nantes, France.
