What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Heidelberg?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Heidelberg if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"I was checking out 30DM worth of groceries, when I first learned that grocery stores don't take credit cards. I pulled out 4 cards and the cashier just said 'Nein' each time. There were 4 people in line behind me watching me reach for AMEX, Discovery, VISA, Mastercard. They just laughed. When I discovered I had only 20DM in my wallet, the cashier had to call her manager (with the key) and remove 3 items so that I could get under my 20DM limit. Everyone was watching my first shopping transgression," explained one expat living in Heidelberg, Germany.
