If possible, visit the country or area you are considering as a homeowner before you make a long-term commitment. Understand and learn the language if you don't already speak it, and make sure you understand the local laws and regulations. Consider opening a local bank account so that you can access money easily and securely, and look into health care options and the quality of the medical facilities. Finally, make sure to build a support system of trusted friends and contacts who can help you out if needed," explained one expat living in Panajachel, Guatemala.
