Shipping Items to Philippines

I need to ship a few boxes (not a container) to the Philippines but everywhere I have looked, it is crazy expensive. I am going there on a tourist visa but am planning to stay for a "very long" while.

What is the most economical way to get personal goods into the Philippines? Should I ship them before I leave, or pay to take them with me on the plane? If I should ship them, what is the most economical shipper?
