Moving to Boquete, Panama
What advice would you give someone preparing to move to your area about the actual move, choosing a neighborhood and finding a home?
HIRE a local attorney before getting or signing anything. We did so and VERY happy that we did . Do not believe or trust anyone. There are many "reject" Gringos there trying to make a buck and Panamanian law works SLOWLY. (

thanks for your post. we too live in virginia and have visited panama many times; one more shot on making a move this winter.
was interested that you had a lawyer AND a realtor and still NOT a positive experience. was there anything that could have been done to avoid your situation? we've heard of similar circumstances, but almost always with ROP purchases w/out the above mentioned professionals and not a place like boquete. we were going to seriously consider this area because we thought it had been "cleaned up". looking forward to your imput.

There is no multiple listing service for realtors. They do not trust each other enough for it to work. They are not licensed. They will overcharge you in a heartbeat. Moving services will quote you one price but after your household goods are shipped there will be other charges. Serious charges, in the thousands. You will pay because you have already paid the bulk of the charge and they have your furniture. JUST SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE FOOT. IT WILL BE LESS PAINFUL. (

and never trust your attorney,,,many are thieves that prey upon the fact that you do not know Panamanian law and maybe not speak Spanish,,,if you do not speak spanish have spmeone you trust read the documrnts before you sign anything

I here so many negative people's thoughts about Panama....You know what I think,,,the people who are writing them are downplaying Panama so they can have it to themselves. I am in real estate, and when someone asks me how is the market here in the USA, I say,,,, oooh real bad, you do not want to get into it. This is because this is the best market right now for a buyer. prices are at a all time low, as well as the rates. I coming to Panama in March.... I think it is going to be a great time.

What activities, clubs and organizations would you recommend to newcomers to help them meet others?
At first I shunned the gringo/expat organized weekly meeting, the Tuesday Morning Informational and Networking Meeting. All the people were of retired age, I'm not. Then I started going, I found I had things to say and others had things to teach. they soon published a small book of the meetings minutes with recaps of many speakers. I learned many valuable things and shared opinions and even changed some opinions. We bonded, we drank local coffee, we bitched and moaned and rejoyced together. seek out such groups and see what you can learn or contribute to them. (
